1 dead after motorcycle crash in Greenbelt

GREENBELT, Md. (WUSA9) -- A man is dead after crashing a motorcycle in Greenbelt, according to Prince George's County police.

Police are investigating the incident, which occurred around 10:50 Tuesday night on Good Luck Road at the intersection of Greenbelt Road.

The police department originally tweeted that two motorcycles were racing in the westbound lanes of Goodluck Road when one of the drivers lost control and crashed.

In a later statement, police said that this was not an illegal racing incident and only one motorcycle was involved. Police say the driver, identified as 56-year-old Robert Edward Bailey, III, of Silver Spring, was traveling westbound on Greenbelt Road when he hit a curb and lost control, striking a guardrail.

He was taken to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Car overturns on Beltway near Greenbelt Metro

GREENBELT, Md. (WUSA9) -- Prince George's County police responded to an overturned car on the Beltway before the Greenbelt Metro station Wednesday.

The call for the accident came in around 11:04 a.m. It happened on the inner loop of the Beltway near the Cherrywood Lane overpass.

No injuries were reported. Sky9 captured a tow truck putting the car back on its wheels.

Md. man sentenced for sexually exploiting girl

GREENBELT, Md. WUSA9) -- A twenty-four-year old man was sentenced to 20 years in prison on Monday for sexually exploiting a minor to produce child porn, authorities said.

The U.S. District Judge Roger W. Titus sentenced David Wayne Sweet, of St. Leonard, Md. to a 20 year sentence followed by supervised release for life, according to authorities.

He must register as a sex offender wherever he works, lives and studies.

Deputies found sexually explicit images of a girl on Sweet's personal cell phone, authorities said. The photos were taken between June and September 2013. According to authorities, they were able to recover all of the photos, even though Sweet had deleted the photos from his phone.

Police arrested Sweet on September 27, 2013. According to authorities, he touched the girl inappropriately while she was sleeping and took photos her.

Md. man sentenced for distribution of child porn

GREENBELT, Md. (WUSA) -- A thirty-three-year-old man from Rockville, Md. was sentenced to six years in prison for distribution of child porn, authorities said Friday.

The U.S. District Judge Paul W. Grimm sentenced Michael Gaskin, of Rockville, to six years of prison, followed by 15 years of supervised release, authorities said.

Gaskin is required to register as a sex offender wherever he lives, is an employee and wherever he studies.

Authorities said Gaskin sent pornographic photos of children and toddlers to somebody he met online between December 2012 and September 2012.

A total of 262 photos and two videos were found on his computer, authorities said.

Md. investment advisor indicted for stealing $1.2M from client

GREENBELT, Md. (WUSA9) --A federal grand jury indicted a 35-year-old man from Md. for illegally transferring $1.2 million from his client's annuity account.

According to authorities, Travis Wetzel, of Frederick, Md. transferred a total of $1,282,224. His indictment was returned Wednesday and he was arrested Thursday, authorities said.

Man wanted for girlfriend's death likely fled country


NBELT, Md. (WUSA9) -- Greenbelt police say they believe a man wanted in connection with the murder of his girlfriend has fled the country, possibly to Mexico.

Police said they found the body of a critical missing 28-year-old woman from Greenbelt, Md. on Friday at 4 p.m., who was last seen on Monday in company of her boyfriend.

We're told investigators are currently working with the U.S. Marshal's service in regards to the case.


2 Md. residents plead guilty in mortgage fraud scheme

GREENBELT, Md. (WUSA9) -- Two Md. residents pleaded guilty Monday and Tuesday to conspiring to commit wire fraud in connection with a mortgage scheme involving the purchase of two properties located on North Patterson Park Avenue in Baltimore, Md.

Authorities said the real estate agent Nsane Phanuel Ligate, 42, of Ashburn, Va. pleaded guilty Tuesday and his co-defendant Cane Mwihava, 43, of Bowie, Md. also pleaded guilty to the same offense Monday.

The United States Attorney for the District of Maryland Rod J. Rosenstein announced the guilty pleas.

Ligate and his co-conspirators found two properties for sale located at 424 and 444 North Patterson Park Avenue in Baltimore. Authorities said during that time, Mwihava started a shell company called Xavier Engineering and Construction Company (XECC), in order to get settlement disbursements for purported home renovations.
