A Question of Substance

Usually it’s the Supreme Court justices who get to ask the tough questions. But every so often, prominent public figures come to Georgetown, and undergraduates glean the rare opportunity to ask questions in return.

Last Wednesday, those who attended Associate Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor’s lecture received an index card where they could write one question for Sotomayor to answer during the standard post-lecture question-and-answer session — a Gaston Hall standard that usually fosters a candid discussion and enriches university programming. In Wednesday’s case, however, the questions were screened and posed by a university official, rather than the student or event attendee who originally wanted an answer.

GREENBELT, Md. (WUSA9) -- A man is dead after being shot in Greenbelt late Monday night, Prince George's County police said.

The homicide happened in the 8600 block of Greenbelt Rd. around 11:05 p.m., authorities said.

When officers got to the scene they found a man suffering from a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene, police stated. Authorities are trying to find a suspect and motive in connection with the shooting.

The incident remains under investigation. This is the second homicide in Prince George's County in less than seven hours.

GREENBELT, Md. (WUSA9) -- Greenbelt police are investigating the shooting of a service dog by an off-duty Metropolitan Police Department officer outside the Greenbelt Dog Park on December 13.

The service dog, a Pit mix named Cleo, was wounded and is recovering, according to her owner LaToya Plummer of Greenbelt.

Plummer, who is deaf and depends on Cleo to alert her to visitors, is demanding that charges be filed against the unnamed police officer.

According to Greenbelt police, the off-duty MPD sergeant told investigators that Cleo ran towards her and her dog aggressively.

The off-duty officer reported Cleo was "bearing teeth", and the officer said she feared for her safety, according to Greenbelt Police spokesman George Mathews.

UPPER MARLBORO, Md. (WUSA9) -- A Silver Spring man pleaded guilty Wednesday to stealing an ambulance, driving under the influence and causing a fatal accident in 2014, the Prince George's County State's Attorney announced.

GREENBELT, Md. (WUSA9) -- Police have found a missing 15-year-old girl from Greenbelt, Md.

Police need your help locating a missing teens from Greenbelt, Md.

Kiera Patrice Richardson, 15, is considered a critical missing person, because police say she is without her seizure medication. She is described as a 5'6" black female, 220 lbs. with black waist-length braids and brown eyes.

Richardson was last seen wearing a white shirt and black and grey spandex pants. Police say she has a nose ring and a pierced eyebrow.

Wonnae Emani Bridgeforth, 15, is described by police as a 5'6" black female, 115 lbs. with black hair and brown eyes. She was thought to have been with Richardson, bu has since been located safe and sound.

GREENBELT, Md. (WUSA9) -- The remains of a once-proud and innovative shopping mall on Rockville Pike were derided by a New York-based architect as an "ugly", "beached whale" during a trial pitting a hold-out department store against the mall's owners who include the Lerner family of Washington.

The testimony by architect Gene Sisco came on the final day of a trial pitting hold-out department store Lord and Taylor against the owners of the '70's-vintage White Flint Mall, who seek to re-develop the 45 acre site into a mixed use development with more than 5-million square feet of retail, residential and office property.

The store continues to operate at White Flint, even as the rest of the mall has been abandoned and demolition has begun.

"It's like a ghost town here," said shopper Anne Jackson.
