The National Institutes of Health (NIH) Community Orchestra and Chorus in association with The East Avenue Ensemble of Chevy Chase present “An Old and New Worlds Holiday Concert”.  The concert will take place on Saturday December 3, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. in Haas Hall, Figge Theater, Georgetown Preparatory School, 10900 Rockville Pike, North Bethesda, Maryland.

This one-time only performance, which is sponsored by the NIH Recreation and Welfare Association and the American Music Performance Foundation, benefits the charities of the NIH.  These charities include the Children's Inn at NIH; Friends of the Clinical Center, which provides emergency financial aid to NIH patients and their families; the Patient Emergency Fund; and Special Love Inc./Camp Fantastic which provides a week-long summer camp and many other programs for children and young adults with cancer and their families.

The concert will feature a combination of the timeless choral music of Respighi’s “Laud to the Nativity” Shaw’s “Many Moods of Christmas” and the stirring orchestral music of Dvorak’s “New World Symphony”.  The Chorus is directed by Bob Johnson who has led choruses from Okinawa to Chevy Chase, sang in the Cathedral Choral Society for 28 years and served as the National Chair for Community Choirs of the American Choral Directors Association from 2003 to 2009.  The Orchestra is directed by Daniel Walshaw who is active as both a conductor and composer.  His experience includes serving as a Co-Director of the University of Maryland Repertoire Orchestra, Assistant Director for the UM Wind Ensemble, co-director of the Terrapin Brass Ensemble and Assistant conductor for the Pontiac Oakland Symphony.

The Orchestra has been nominated two years in a row for the Acacia Federal Savings Bank "Nice Guys Award" in recognition of their community outreach and charitable work.  For more information, please visit the NIHCO website at www.nihco.org
