Student-Run Capital One Bank Branch Celebrates Grand Opening

The following information was sent to us by Quon Wilson and Jamie Glick:

State and local officials will join Capital One Bank and Prince George’s County Public Schools on October 3, 2011 to welcome the inaugural class of student bankers at Parkdale High School in Riverdale.

Ten students from Parkdale High School were selected among their peers to run and operate a bank branch in the school, under the supervision of Capital One Bank management.  The program will offer students and faculty basic banking services, as well as promote financial literacy among the wider student body.

The Parkdale High School branch is the first Capital One Student-Run Bank Branch in the Greater Washington, DC region, and the fourth in-school bank branch opened by Capital One Bank since 2007. Capital One established its first student-run branch at the Fordham Leadership Academy for Business and Technology in the Bronx, and others are located in Harlem and Newark, New Jersey.

Student participants in the program report that they not only feel more prepared to manage their finances in the future, but that they have helped their peers and family members to learn important money management skills as well.  Almost all of the former student bankers have since enrolled in college.
