Foster a Feline Friend, or Adopt a Cat for No Fee This Month!
Foster a Feline Friend, or Adopt a Cat for No Fee This Month!

The Washington Humane Society (WHS) invites you to be a part of Adopt-A-Shelter-Cat Month! All cats age 2 and older are available for adoption for no fee throughout the month of June. Plus, all amazing cats of all ages living in “Kitty City” at our New York adoption center are fee-waived. Can’t adopt now? We are urgently seeking kitten and cat foster caregivers during our busiest time of year. Counselors and staff are available to answer questions to help you find your new best friend or help a cat in need by providing temporary TLC.

Interacting with a cat on a daily basis can help you reduce stress and improve your mood. They are playful companions to have at home and even in the workplace, and can be wonderfully independent and affectionate. If you are considering adopting a pet this month, be sure to check that your home is pet-friendly if you rent. Once you are ready to visit the adoption center and potentially take home your new furry friend, remember to bring few things from our checklist.

You can meet our pets currently available for adoption at either of our adoption centers during pet visiting hours, or at one of our adoption events in the community. Once you find a pet who best suits you, we ask that you visit with him outside of their kennel to get to know him one on one.

The only things left to do are to complete the cat application form, and have a conversation with an adoption counselor to help you find the perfect pet match for your lifestyle.

After your application is approved, in most cases your pet can go home with you right away. It’s that easy!

Your new best friend will be spayed/neutered and have received all applicable vaccinations, a microchip, and FIV/FELV tests, as well as 30 days of pet health insurance from Shelter Care and a goodie bag from Home Buddies DC.

Is now not the time to adopt? Consider fostering.

If you can’t adopt a pet but would still like to help an animal in need, consider saving a life by fostering one of our shelter pets while he waits to find a forever home.

We are always in need of foster volunteers who can provide love and care for animals, particularly for those with special needs such as mothers nursing kittens or puppies, orphaned bottle babies, animals too young to be adopted, animals recovering from surgery or illness, and wonderful animals who might be too shy or timid to reside in the shelter environment. We have an especially high need for cat and kitten foster homes at this time.

Anyone who has the time, compassion, and space for an animal can foster a pet. If you think you would like to serve as a foster caregiver, start out by filling out an application here. Potential cat fosters may contact Alyson Burgess at 202-608-1356 ext. 101 or ABurgess@washhumane.org, and dog foster applicants may contact Lauren Hagerty at 202-723-5730 ext. 136 or LHagerty@washhumane.org for more information.
