HERO CENTRAL: Food For Others Saves Families from Hunger

FAIRFAX, Va. (WUSA9)--- "I get to go home and make something to eat for you know my little ones," said Lamar Edmonds on his first trip to Food for Others. The non-profit organization distributes free food from its warehouse. Edmonds gets bread, a package of food along with milk and eggs. The items are a part of the Emergency Assistance Program.

Northern Virginia has about 90,000 people living in poverty. The number represents about 5 percent of the population in the area, according to the U.S. Census.

DC Policeman Charged After Son Takes Gun To School

GLENN DALE, Md. (AP) - A D.C. police lieutenant has been charged with leaving a loaded gun where his son found it and took it to school.

Prince George's County court documents show Mark Antonio Hodge of Glenn Dale has been charged with leaving a loaded firearm in a place where he would have known that a minor would gain access to the firearm.

The court documents say officers were called to Duval High School in Lanham on March 27 for a report of a student with a firearm. Officers learned the 15-year-old had taken the gun from his home. He said his dad kept the weapon under some clothes in a closet.

It was unclear whether the gun was Hodge's service weapon. No one answered at a telephone number for Hodge on Friday.

Police: School Janitor Had Sexual Relationship With Girl

LANHAM, Md. (WUSA9) -- A school janitor has been arrested for having a sexual relationship with a 15-year-old girl, police said in a news release. 

Steven Ray Poe, 36, of Prince George's County, had "inappropriate sexual contact," with the girl between April and June of 2013, police said. 

Poe is a janitor at DuVal High School, in Lanham, police said. 

"The victim is a student there. The victim alleges that between April and June 2013, Poe had inappropriate sexual contact with her, both on and off school grounds. The victim told her mother, who then contacted police," police said in the news release. 

Poe was arrested in his home on Sunday night. He faces charges of third degree sex offense and second degree assault, police said.  

Poe remains in custody at the Department of Corrections on a $20,000 bond, police said.

Rat & Mouse Poop, Mold On Ice Machine, No Health Permits Close Restaurants

WASHINGTON, DC (WUSA9)-- In this week's Food Alert, a fine dining restaurant operating with an expired business license, another without a health permit, and then there are the mold and rodent issues.

Health inspectors shut down Taipei 101 Tokyo Cafe on Bethesda Avenue in Bethesda, MD;  Mauricio's on Bladensburg Road in Brentwood, MD;  Cups and Mugs located in the Reston Hospital Center in Fairfax, VA; ZMart on South Capitol Street in Southwest, DC; and, Rajaji Curry House in Northwest, DC.

At Bethesda's Taipei 101 Tokyo Cafe inspectors observed, "Rodent droppings throughout the facility and on food contact surfaces."

At Cups and Mugs in Fairfax, county health inspectors closed the coffee shop citing "critical health code violations."  Inspectors wrote-up the shop for not staffing anyone certified in food safety, not tracking workers' disease status, and not having required soap and paper towels.
