METRO SCHOOL of the ARTS ACADEMY AUDITIONS, SUN., MAR. 1; for 2015-2016 School Year

Students interested in attending the Metropolitan School of the Arts (MSA) of Alexandria and Lorton, Va. can audition on Sun., Mar. 1 at MSA Lorton Campus at 9601 Ox Road. Auditions are required as part of the 2015-2016 academy registration. The MSA Academy audition is for performing arts students from 6th grade to 12th grade. Students should call 703-339-0444 ext.3 or visit www.metropolitanarts.org to register for an audition time. 

The audition process will give prospective students an opportunity to demonstrate his or her skills in dance, music and theater for the chairs of the respective arts departments.  Applicants must attend a live audition if they live within three geographical states of MSA.  Prospective students living beyond the three-state radius may submit a DVD audition. 

18 displaced in two-alarm apartment fire in Greenbelt


GREENBELT, Md. (WUSA 9) -- Eighteen residents have been displaced from six condo units after a two-alarm apartment fire in Greenbelt early Saturday morning.

The fire occurred in the 8400 block of Greenbelt Road around 5 a.m., fire officials said.

An 87-year-old man was transported to the hospital after suffering from smoke inhalation. Fire officials say he is in stable condition.

Firefighters said hoarding conditions made it difficult for firefighters.

Man shot in Greenbelt parking lot


WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- A man was found shot in a Greenbelt parking lot on Tuesday evening, according to police.

Police were called to the 78 hundred block of Mandan Road in Greenbelt for a report of shots fired at about 7:26 p.m., police said.

Officers arriving at the parking lot found an adult male suffering from several gunshot wounds, police said.

The man was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries, police said.

Police are looking for two black males both described as being in their twenties, standing at about 5 feet ten inches tall and weighing about 180 pounds, polices said.

Ben Cherington and Kylie Levy of Metropolitan School of the Arts (MSA) Performing Arts Academy of Lorton, Va. and Alexandria, Va. were recently recognized for All-Star Cast by the Virginia Theatre Association Conference for their performances in I Never Saw Another Butterfly. This was the first time Metropolitan School of the Arts had participated in the conference. Cherington, an 11th grader from Burke, Va., and Levy, a 10th grader from Fairfax, Va. are students at Metropolitan School of the Arts. For more information, go to www.metropolitanarts.org.

Metropolitan School of the Arts (MSA) also earned the 2014 Virginia Theatre Association Conference award for Best Costume Design and was recognized for Staging, as well as received an honorable mention for Best Play, I Never Saw Another Butterfly.

DC man gets 18 months for robbing Md. bank


GREENBELT, Md. (AP) - A D.C. man who robbed a Clinton bank of more than $100,000 has been sentenced to 18 months in prison.

Twenty-four-year-old Emanuel Honemond entered the plea Monday in federal court in Greenbelt.

According to his plea agreement, in September 2011, Honemond and others entered the Navy Federal Credit Union. Prosecutors say the masked men announced a robbery and fled in a van with more than $100,000.

Authorities say the money had a hidden tracking device and police quickly found the robbers.

Four injured after car crashes into MD nail salon


GREENBELT, Md. (WUSA9) -- Four women were injured on Friday evening when a driver crashed their car into a Maryland nail salon.

The incident occurred in the 55 hundred block of Cherrywood Lane in Greenbelt, the Prince George's County Fire Department said. The driver remained on the scene and was questioned by the Greenbelt City police, the fire department said.

The driver has been identified as a 52-year-old woman. The driver became confused when parking her car and hit the gas instead of the break, sending her car through the front window of the nail salon, police said.

The four female customers in the salon were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.


Pedestrian dies after being struck in MD


GREENBELT, Md. (AP) - Prince George's County Police say a man has died after being struck and killed while trying to cross a road in Greenbelt.

It happened about 8:40 p.m. Tuesday at Greenbelt Road and Aerospace Drive. Police say 58-year-old Armado Fernandez of Greenbelt was crossing Greenbelt Road when he was hit by a car.

Officers say Fernandez died Wednesday at a local hospital. Investigators say he was not walking in a crosswalk.

Police say the driver who hit Fernandez remained at the scene.
