CityDance DREAM Program Performs On Big Stage

This past Tuesday, March 8, 144 students from the District and Prince George’s County, Maryland who participate in the D.C. CityDance DREAM after-school outreach program performed a six-minute dance routine at halftime of the Washington Wizards game against the Milwaukee Bucks.

CityDance, which was founded in 1996, is a professional dance company and a conservatory, training school that offers free community dance and literacy programs to children throughout the D.C. area, taught by CityDance Ensemble members.  Tuesday evening marked the sixth year that the DREAM program students have performed at the Verizon Center.

The after-school program combines dance lessons with reading and writing help, something that DREAM teacher Charonne Butler believes is incredibly beneficial to the students.

I am Dave McKenna

There are far more important things going on in the world right now than Dan Snyder's lawsuit against the parent company of Washington City Paper: political unrest in the middle east, extreme weather at home in the U.S., and some football game on Sunday. But for some reason, I am completely riveted by Dan Snyder's vendetta on City Paper writer, Dave McKenna. For the last two days, I've been reading every piece of news I could find on “the story.” At the first possible opportunity, I chipped in what little money my debt-riddled posterior could afford to help the Washington City Paper Defense Fund. It was then that I realized why I am so engrossed by this little bit of human drama; I am Dave McKenna.

Orioles Owner Angelos Bids to Buy Rosecroft, Put Slots There

Orioles Owner Angelos Bids to Buy Rosecroft, Put Slots There
Bid comes as Maryland's second casino opens at Ocean Downs

Hanah Cho of the Baltimore Sun reports that Baltimore Orioles owner Peter G. Angelos is bidding to buy a bankrupt horse-racing track in Prince George's County and resurrecting a push to allow slot machines at that facility.

Angelos' proposal came as Maryland's second slots casino opened Tuesday at the Ocean Downs racetrack on the Eastern Shore. Gov. Martin O'Malley, state leaders and Worcester County officials attended the grand opening of the $45 million casino, the latest expansion of Maryland gambling that took many years and rancorous debate to become a reality.

And the debate hasn't ended. While voters approved slots at five locations in 2008, efforts have been underway since then to expand gambling to other sites.
